When he worked on the Contemporary Life series in the early 1790s, Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804) clearly thought back to his earlier painting, executed in Spain. He would not have made a record of such a small painting, so in contrast to his images borrowing from the Würzburg frescoes, this drawing is not a precise copy. In the following years, Domenico would include a closely related scene in the Punchinello series, making the Punchinellos both musicians and audience.
This magnet was made from the Morgan's collections as a complement the exhibition Spirit and Invention: Drawings by Giambattista and Domenico Tiepolo on view at the Morgan Library & Museum October 27, 2023 through January 28, 2024.
